From the Historical Research Centre The English surname Whelpdale, or Welpton, is of homonymic origin, belonging to that category of surnames deriving from a place near which the initial bearer resided. In this instance, the surname derives from someone who hailed from or dwelled in Whelpington in Northumberland. In the middle Ages, before the introduction of a structured system of surnames, bynames were often added to the personal name of the bearer for purposes of further identification. There are other place names called Whelpdale or Whelpton in Cumberland, Northants and East York.
